il Verdi: Amazing Italian in Atlantic City, NJ

I know a few people who don’t think of class when they think of Atlantic City. And sure, I can entertain this sentiment to a certain degree, but at the end of the day, a classy person can find class. (You can quote me on that!)

In Atlantic City’s most obvious casino/hotel, the Tropicana, one of the best restaurants on this side of the Mississippi dwells: il Verdi. It’s the Tropicana’s house Italian restaurant, located on the North Tower side of the casino.

The lights dim as you walk into this restaurant. Down the hall, leading you to your table, the black marble walls glimmer and the sound of your feet on the floors taps you into a perfect dining area. Recently refinished, il Verdi is no longer green, as its name suggests. The decor is now more modern–more perfect. The art hangs silently and subtly on the walls and the candlelight on your white-tablecloth table dances through a red glass, casting shadows here and there. You’re fully attended to in this upscale dining resort, with waiters who treat you like royalty. My own waiters were so well-versed in everything from the history of our wine to the precise ingredients in our dessert that I couldn’t help but remember their names: Mark and Richard. And yet, even the most thorough service can’t outshine a delicately flawless cuisine.

I dined with three others and all of us were whole-heartedly pleased with our dishes. We were actually beyond pleased. We were wonderfully surprised.

We started with their Crespelle Farcite Con Ricotta and Bruschetta Di Granchio. These crepes filled with ricotta cheese, spinach, and caramelized cipollini onions–all fried in fontina cheese–are to die for. And the Bruschetta, a mixture of jumbo lump crabmeat, fresh plum tomatoes, fresh basil, and grilled semolina parmesan toast is just as perfect.

We all had different entrees.
I had the Almone Di Susanna: grilled salmon topped with jumbo lump crabmeat, tarragon, diced tomatoes, white wine and garlic lemon butter sauce. A+

Another had the Scallopine Di Vitello Al Tre Formaggi: Sauteed Veal Medallions with three imported cheeses in a pinot grigio cream sauce. Reportedly an A+

Another had Filetto Di Manzo Al Gorgonazola E Finocchio: Grilled Filet Mignon over a caramelized bed of mushrooms and fennel with gorgonzola cheese and demi glace. Reportedy an A+

Also at our table was the most popular dish, yet unlisted, the lobster. Reportedly an A+

For dessert we had cheesecake and crem brulee and throughout the meal we had two bottles of wine. Not one thing at this restaurant is wrong. Everything is glamorous and delicious–even the multiple types of bread brought out to us as we were seated.

Is it in Atlantic City? Yep. Is it in the Tropicana? Yep. Is it one of the best meals I’ve had on the east coast? Yep.
