Whenever I find myself in Victoria, I always make it a point to drop by Legends Comics and Books. It is easily the best comic book store on a street crowded with comic book stores.
There are a few things that make Legends special. It has been around since 1992 and is locally owned and operated by two former customers, Lloyd Chesley and Gareth Gaudin. Both of them possess extensive product knowledge and a great sense of humour. They are also extremely friendly and helpful. I have spent many hours talking and laughing there. Unlike most stores these days, Legends focuses on selling just comics rather than toys, role-playing games or apparel. There are literally thousands of back issues available in their secret basement vault. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, they will gladly check it for you. In addition to new and old comics you will find an expanse of ‘zines, mini-comics, graphic novels, trade paperbacks(some no longer in print), magazines and art-books. If you’re looking for a bargain there are value priced collections of story-arcs and old comics priced from 25 cents to a buck or two. Whole collections are often bought, so there is always a steady flow of new and different material awaiting you. Expect to find more than simply super-heroes: indies, euro-comics, manga, westerns, horror, romance, war stories… whatever you’re into, you’ll find it at Legends. The interior walls often pay host to different artists’ exhibitions, turning the store into a mini-gallery as well. Gareth Gaudin is also an accomplished cartoonist. Pick up a copy of his Magic Teeth Dailies(copies of which were sent to the Canadian troops stationed in Afghanistan), the Perogy Cat book or some of his old mini-comics(dating back to 1986). As far as I am aware, this is the only comic store in Victoria that allows dogs inside, too!
So if you are visiting Victoria, stop by Legends Comics and Books and tell them Andrew sent you!
